I know this because I’ve been there before. Boost Suite was born out of my own frustration trying to start and grow businesses.

My name is Jamie and I started my first business back in 2006.

It was an online education company focussing on women’s health and nutrition and the learning curve was steep. Not only did I need to learn how to develop coaching programs and work through the long and arduous process of understanding my customer’s needs and wants, I also needed to learn how to deliver that information online.

This meant learning how to build a website (we bootstrapped everything and so didn’t have the $13,000 we were quoted to build a website), navigate my way around WordPress, choose a theme (and all the associated elements that need to be taken into account), track analytics, design and upload a logo, and that was before I ventured into the online content delivery platforms.

This took me nearly 7 years to fully wrap my head around and I felt comfortable at the very moment I got completely over that business and decided to move on.

You see, as long as I can remember, I’ve been a foodie. I don’t smoke, I don’t party, I’m not really into travelling, so basically all my discretionary income goes on food.

I eat out, I shop in gourmet grocers, and I order strange products online (I’m always getting funny looks from the postman when he drops off another strange package at my door) to create gourmet meals.

My hundreds of hours spent in restaurants and cafes has given me a unique insight into what works and what doesn’t, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to put to the test. So, in 2013, I opened a cafe.

I live in a small country town with very limited food offerings and it’s always driven me nuts. So instead of sitting around whinging about it, I did something about it. I found a prime location, signed a lease, and got to work building the cafe I’ve always wanted.

To do this, I had to learn about shop design (HUGELY important), construction (those walls aren’t going to build themselves), suppliers, Point-Of-Sale systems, EFTPOS, staffing, contracts, 401(k), health insurance, and everything in between.

The hardest part about it was that the information I needed for both businesses just wasn’t available. Or if it was, it was presented in an overly-technical, confusing, contradictory way by people who’d obviously never run their own business.

This led to me wasting hundreds of hours chasing dead-end paths, right when I needed things to be clear and simple.
