South Dakota Business Entity Search, DBAs Included
A South Dakota business entity search runs through the Secretary of State’s (SD SOS) free Business Information Search, which can refuse a lookup with “reCAPTCHA failed. Please try again.” The box below queries the same registry without that check and takes a company name, a registered agent’s name or a Business ID in the state’s two-letter, six-digit form (FB298269).

Running a South Dakota Business Search on sosenterprise.sd.gov
The Business Information Search runs on Business Services Online at sosenterprise.sd.gov, and “Information about individual business entities can be searched, viewed and printed using this search tool for free.” Type a name (Starts With by default, or Contains) or a Business ID, and tick Active Entities Only to hide closed companies.

For a South Dakota LLC lookup, open the Business Entity Detail: type, status, initial filing date, the state it was formed in, the next annual report due date, addresses and registered agent, plus a History table of filings with free document images. A record opened from a saved link shows empty fields. The portal’s registered agent search also lists every business an agent represents.
Business licenses are not in this registry: “Any business with a physical presence in South Dakota is required to be licensed for sales tax collection” by the Department of Revenue. UCC liens are not in it either; a UCC-2 Information Request costs $20 per debtor, or $300 a year buys search-only online access.
Reading a South Dakota Business ID
A Business ID is two capital letters and six digits: DB and FB for domestic and foreign corporations, DL for a domestic LLC, UB for a DBA in the records seen. Daktronics, Inc. shows two numbers: DB009106, its South Dakota corporation, reads Converted, while FB298269, a foreign corporation, reads Good Standing.
| Business ID | Record |
|---|---|
FB298269 | Daktronics, Inc., business corporation (foreign), Good Standing |
DB009106 | Daktronics, Inc., business corporation (domestic), Converted |
DB000104 | Raven Industries, Inc., business corporation (domestic), Good Standing |
DL024073 | Raven Industries Holding, LLC, Limited Liability Company (domestic), Terminated |
A company in order reads Good Standing rather than Active. In the search above, db006419 becomes DB006419, but DB6419 finds nothing: the six digits must be complete. The Secretary of State “does not have FEIN numbers on file”; the IRS issues them, so tracking down a South Dakota company’s EIN starts elsewhere.
South Dakota Good Standing Proof: A PDF Anyone Can Verify
“Anyone can request a Certificate of Good Standing/Existence for any business entity registered with the Secretary of State in South Dakota”, except general partnerships, reserved and registered names, and DBAs. It costs $20 online, arrives as a PDF to download at once, and whoever receives one can check its verification number on the Secretary of State’s certificate page.
Filing a DBA in South Dakota: Online or at Any County Register of Deeds
A fictitious name statement is required unless the business name shows each owner’s surname or is already on file. It “shall be electronically filed with the secretary of state, or filed in paper form with any register of deeds in the state,” for $10 either way, and lasts five years; an expired DBA can’t be renewed and must be filed again.

DBAs sit in their own search, which can look up an owner’s name and whose records list the owners. Without a filing, no one may maintain a lawsuit in the business’s assumed name.
Owners Are Not Filed in South Dakota
“Owners of corporations and LLCs are NOT filed with the Secretary of State’s office.” Filings list LLC organizers and corporate incorporators and directors; annual reports name governors, but a member-managed LLC doesn’t have to name them, so its record may show only an organizer and an agent.
The registered agent must be a South Dakota resident or registered entity with a physical and mailing address in the state. A corporation may name an office, such as President, as its agent, so its record can show a title instead of a name; that option “does NOT apply to LLCs.”
Annual Reports: the 1st of the Anniversary Month, or January 31 From 2027
“Annual reports are due EVERY YEAR on the 1st day of the anniversary month” of the first filing: an entity filed June 11, 2026 first reports by June 1, 2027. Filing opens two months before. LLCs and corporations pay $55 online or $70 on paper, nonprofits $10; limited partnerships and business trusts file none.
An entity turns Delinquent once two months pass after the due date, and owes a $55 late fee. From January 1, 2027, a 2026 law lets an entity choose instead to report by January 31 each year, marked on its formation document and changeable by form. Each report also states whether the entity owns agricultural land and has foreign beneficial owners, and the state publishes a yearly list of those that do. See South Dakota’s LLC report rules.
No Reinstatement Without a Tax Clearance Certificate
When a missed report, a lapsed agent or an unpaid fee has dissolved a company, it reinstates for $150 (LLC) or $300 (corporation) plus the reports owed, but the application is not processed until the Secretary of State receives an approved Tax Clearance Certificate from the South Dakota Department of Revenue.
Back reports can be paid online, but the application itself must be mailed. There is no deadline for a domestic LLC or corporation, and reinstatement is retroactive to the dissolution date. “Foreign Entities CANNOT reinstate”: they register again, and a foreign LLC or corporation costs $750 to register against $150 for a South Dakota one.
Does It Sound the Same? South Dakota’s Name Test
South Dakota reads “distinguishable on record” as “do the two names sound the same?”: “Dear LLC and Deer LLC are spelled differently, but sound the same and are therefore not distinguishable,” while adding “John” to Philips Avenue Diner makes a new name.
The Name Availability Search “is an EXACT name search only,” so variations have to be checked in the Business Information Search with Contains. A reservation costs $25 and lasts 120 days. Forming a South Dakota LLC costs $150 online, and a broader name check adds federal trademarks and domains. A name containing TRUST needs approval from the Division of Banking and a paper filing.
